Paediatric palliative care in southern hemisphere countries

Soins palliatifs pédiatriques.jpg

Fondation Dora supported Médecins du Monde Suisse in the setting up of a pilot project to provide paediatric palliative care for vulnerable populations in southern hemisphere countries.

Paediatric palliative care involves overall care for a child and their family during treatment and also during a period of bereavement, in care facilities and at home. Médecins du Monde Suisse was motivated to act following appeals by dedicated professionals working in countries with limited resources.

preliminary phase, in which a needs assessment was carried out, allowed for the sharing of different practices and expertise to promote the integration of, and access to, paediatric palliative care and pain management in countries in the southern hemisphere.

seconde phase aims to implement changes to the concept and practice of caregiving, as well as to North-South relations and perceptions. This second phase is organised around four main themes: training, support for caregiving, research and network, and advocacy. This phase is being rolled out in four countries: Cameroon, Nicaragua, Democratic Republic of Congo and Togo, in collaboration with local partners.
