Deafness care
for young children
in Togo

Fondation Dora supported the association L’Appel in the creation of a new early diagnosis and care centre for deaf children aged 0 to 6 in Lomé, capital of Togo.
The centre carries out diagnostic assessments of children to determine their level of deafness and evaluate what kind of assistive equipment they may benefit from. It then follows this up with regular checks of the equipment provided and monitoring of the speech therapy the child is receiving to aid their auditory education and help them develop their oral and sign language communication.
Ten professionals have been trained to operate the centre. This number will be increased as necessary. Each child is given a care plan which includes family support and appropriate measures for the development of their communication.
Early diagnosis and treatment improve the home life and social life of these deaf children, and allows them to benefit from appropriate schooling and become socially autonomous adults.
