Preventing family separation

This programme in Moldova is piloted by Lumos. It aims to address the needs of vulnerable young children and prevent family separation. One of the poorest countries in Europe, Moldova has a high child mortality rate and over 13,000 children at risk of family separation. Many vulnerable children have no access to appropriate health services, particularly in rural areas. Consequently, families are often forced to send their children to live in orphanages or institutions in order to access such services.
Working with the Moldovan government, Lumos is developing and implementing early years intervention services; these high-quality Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) centres offer appropriate support to at-risk children at national level. They promote the inclusion of these children in kindergartens, help parents of disabled children develop the skills they need to deliver appropriate care, and train professionals in early years intervention, primary healthcare and social and educational services.
The overall impact of the project is to reduce mortality rates of children under five and prevent family separation for young children at risk.
